About Me
I'm Stu Janis, a retired statistician living in western Wisconsin. During my thirty-five year career at 3M, I often joked with colleagues that I must have been a copy editor in a previous life, because I would always notice typos, "grammos," extra spaces, and small details that could be improved in other people's writing and presentations. As part of my statistics job, I regularly edited my department's publications and training material, and in the late '90s and early 2000s, I was the special publications editor for the American Society for Quality's Statistics Division. Around the same time, I was the editor (as well as a coauthor) of the Statistics Division's book, Improving Performance Through Statistical Thinking, published by Quality Press, and a few years later, I edited Data Sanity: a Quantum Leap to Unprecedented Results, by Davis Balestracci, published by the Medical Group Management Association.
Despite my quantitative bent, I have a creative side too. I've been a lifelong musician (YouTube videos here), but the COVID-19 pandemic put music on hold. To fill the gap, I began doing statistics tutoring and started down the path to becoming a freelance proofreader and editor. I have a certification from Proofread Anywhere's General Proofreading: Theory & Practice course, and I've been doing freelance proofreading and editing since the summer of 2022. I enjoy helping people share their messages and stories by making them clean, concise, and error-free.
